The goal of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to support the healthy development of area youth, by addressing their need for positive adult contact. This helps to increase protective factors that will improve the young persons’ chances for success throughout their lifetime! We hold ourselves accountable for measurable outcomes such as increased educational achievement, avoidance of risky behaviors, higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships. In fact, national research on the Big Brothers Big Sisters program has shown that Littles in our program are less likely to skip school or begin using illegal drugs.
General Match Overview
The program involves one-to-one mentoring between an adult mentor, also known as a “BIG”, and a “Little”, who is somewhere in the range of 6-14 years old at the beginning of the match. Special care is taken on the front end to ensure that we have a good balance of personalities and interests so that this pairing can lead to a caring and supportive relationship.
Big Brothers, Sisters or even Big Couples, spend around 6 to 8 hours a month, preferably 2 hours a week, for at least 1 year, with their Little Brother or Sister. Our goal is to develop a relationship that is mutually satisfying, where both mentor and mentee want to get together on a regular basis.
Matches are encouraged to do low- or no-cost activities such as playing sports or attending sports events, going on a hike, playing board games or watching a movie, whatever it is that both of them enjoy. It is also nice if they can introduce each other to activities that they don’t know they like yet!
